Project overview
After initial meetings with the owner to discuss his vision and aspirations for the business the following brief was created.
To develop a brand identity for a new café/bistro in Weybridge that blends refined charm with a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere. The venue will serve as a warm, local meeting spot while appealing to a slightly more discerning, higher-end market.
Objectives
Create a brand that feels premium yet approachable.
Reflect the Italian heritage of the owner subtly through tone, design elements, and language.
Build an identity that encourages local connection and loyalty.
Target Audience
Professionals, creatives, and locals who appreciate quality, style, and a relaxed-yet-elegant environment. They value authenticity, good coffee and conversation.
Tone & Personality
Warm, sophisticated, grounded.
Think: slow mornings, clinking glasses and friendly familiar faces.
Mood Board
I started by exploring scenes that convey an authentic Italian atmosphere. Focusing on old shopfronts, signage, cobbled streets, cuisine and terracotta buildings. This provided inspiration for potential typefaces and colour schemes.
Initial Concepts
At this stage I started to experiment with typefaces and colour palettes. From my research I wanted to explore combinations of green, beige, stone and terracotta combinations as I felt it complimented the images of food and the architecture that I had seen. Regarding typefaces I felt a nod towards an Art Deco style would achieve the look that we were after. Clean, elegant and a sense of sophistication.
Final Primary Wordmark
The Primary Wordmark was created using this bold, geometric sans serif which gives a strong modern meets classic feel. I chose a stacked arrangement with the emphasis on the owners name. Kerning was adjusted and increased to enhance the clean aesthetic and visually balance the characters.
Final Secondary Wordmark
A landscape version was also provided to be used sparingly or in any situation where the space better suits this format.
Typography
For the Primary typeface I decided on 'Mostro Nuova'. This was also used to create the final wordmark and to be used sparingly for headings. I felt his typeface had a clean, geometric sans-serif style with a touch of Art Deco flair and feels elegant and stylish which compliments the 'Italian heritage' criteria in the initial brief.
To compliment it I paired it with a warmer, more humanist secondary font. It is more legible for menus and longer copy and creates a clear hierarchy.

Colour Palette
For the primary colour I wanted to find a deep, elegant, rich green. The contrast between the green and the earthy Sabbia helps communicate quality with warmth.

Business Cards

Loyalty Stamp
I put forward this concept for a loyalty card and customised stamp using an image Enzo Sola (the owner). I thought this stamp added a human connection and a playful touch which would be memorable and further support the direction that the 'CAFÉ ENZO' brand wanted to go in.

Takeaway Packaging
When designing the packaging I wanted a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic with a prominent wordmark that could further advertise the brand when outside of the Café. Ultimately, I wanted the takeaway experience to feel as thoughtful and curated as the café itself, something that feels worth keeping and not just to throw away.
